In 1965,
June Christy could look back on 20 years of great music, but her best work was definitely behind her. The voice that could whisper or bite was beginning to reveal unintentional flaws, and for her album,
Something Broadway Something Latin, she resorted to a bid for the mainstream with something for everyone. As such, the songs come from a variety of sources, mostly Broadway hits of the day, sprinkled with one current movie hit (none of which quite survived to be standards, with the possible exception of the movie hit "The Shadow of Your Smile"). Producer Bill Miller and arranger Ernie Freeman looked to the pop charts for their sound (mostly Brill Building tropes), and although
Christy never needed to belt out her songs to sound bewitching, she sounds a little tired and uninspired by her surroundings. The highlights come from a pair of songs perfect for her introspection, "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "Here's That Rainy Day." ~ John Bush
