One might think the Philippines have had enough of mushy love songs, but you look around and see it isn't so. The love song reigns supreme in the Philippines, and local artists often don't have much choice but to record love songs. For whatever reason, the market is more receptive to adventurous albums by Western artists (which includes rock, rap, techno, and other styles), in addition to Western-made love songs. Local record companies are very aware of this, painfully so, and must plan their local releases accordingly. 2002's
Songs From the Heart, Vol. 1 contains 16 love songs by various artists and was compiled by EMI Philippines with material taken from its back catalog. Many artists featured on this compilation are no longer signed to the label. As far as a compilation of love songs is concerned, this album provides a number of nice moments. Keno's "Color Me Lonely," for example, is a highlight, and features strong, warm singing on an exquisite melody composed by the singer. The Boyfriends' "I Think I'm Falling in Love" is another highlight, and features a
Fifth Dimension type of sound. Keempee de Leon's performance on "Better Believe It" is a revelation, as the singer is known more for his acting and for his stormy personal life. He should get back into the recording studio. The album's only upbeat song is Brix Ferraris' "Madly in Love," which moves on a contagious, adventurous groove. All in all, this is a nice collection of love songs, better than one might expect.
