Three separate groups are featured in this compilation of performances from the 1983 Kool Jazz Festival in Midem, France. Guitarist
Pat Metheny is a special guest with
the Heath Brothers, though he remains somewhat in the background for much of the mid-tempo blues "Move to the Groove," with bassist
Percy Heath and tenor saxophonist
Jimmy Heath robustly soloing ahead of the younger musician. The
Dave Brubeck Quartet is up next, showcasing clarinetist
Bill Smith with his digital delay in a haunting rendition of "Lover Man." Following the ever popular "Blue Rondo a la Turk," bassist
Chris Brubeck offers some gutbucket bass trombone in "Ol' Bill Basie," which also has a bit of stride piano by the leader. Blues great
B.B. King rounds out the CD with a trio of signature tunes, highlighted by his famous "The Thrill Is Gone." While the mix of music is a bit unusual, it is well worth acquiring.
