This CD features guitarist
Mundell Lowe on two separate occasions. Eight selections are from 1977, and other than an unaccompanied version of his "I Think You Always Knew," these find
Lowe leading a trio also including bassist
Bob Magnusson and drummer
Nick Ceroli.
Ceroli passed away before the four numbers from 1992 were cut (two
Lowe duets apiece with either pianist
Mike Wofford or
Magnusson), so this set is subtitled "A Tribute to Nick Ceroli."
Lowe mostly sticks to standards, although he contributed two tunes and also performs Al Cohn's "P-Town," Benny Carter's "Souvenirs," and
Miles Davis' late-period "Star People." Overall, this CD serves as a particularly strong introduction to the music of the underrated
Mundell Lowe.
