Dave Mason's relentless touring and recording schedule may have been draining his creativity at this point, but
Split Coconut was a drop-off from his first two Columbia albums, the songs seemingly thrown together and recorded quickly.
Mason enlisted strong vocal assistance from
Graham Nash and
David Crosby and the
