Duo, duo, c’est vite dit ! Seules les deux premières œuvres de l’album peuvent prétendre à cette appellation, et encore : le Duo pour deux violons solo et orchestre à cordes fait appel, ainsi qu’on s’en doute, à un orchestre à cordes en plus du duo. Seul Clapping music, pour deux « voix » - des voix limitées à des claquements de main se chassant l’un l’autre selon un principe de déphasage d’une croche à chaque reprise de la cellule de base, qui comporte douze claps. Le reste de l’album couvre des ouvrages de grande ampleur, chorale et/ou orchestrale, dont : The Four Sections de 1987, une sorte de concerto pour orchestre dont les trois premiers mouvements s’adressent respectivement aux cordes, aux percussions et aux vents, avant qu’un quatrième et dernier ne s’ouvra à l’orchestre entier. Suivent les Daniel Variations de 2006, écrites en hommage à Daniel Pearl assassiné au Pakistan par une bande d’assassins se cachant derrière le prétexte d’une religion, un ouvrage pour chœur et 14 solistes instrumentaux. L’album se referme avec les variations You Are de 2004, conçues pour un ensemble vocal et orchestre. Comme toujours, on retrouvera dans toutes ces œuvres le style si personnel de Reich, avec ses cellules répétées dont chaque répétition donne lieu à d’infimes variations jusqu’à ce que la première cellule soit totalement déformée.
