Pianist
Earl Hines recorded dozens of sessions during the 1960s and '70s after his rediscovery. This Black Lion CD differs from most in that he utilizes a sextet. In addition to
Hines (who consistently takes solo honors), there are some good spots for trumpeter
Doc Cheatham (who was soon to be rediscovered himself), Rudy Rutherford (on clarinet, alto and tenor) and guitarist
Jack Wilkins.
Buck Clayton contributed three obscure tunes to the date but the band sounds more comfortable on such
Hines standbys as "You Can Depend on Me" and "Rosetta." Fine small-group swing from the early '70s. ~ Scott Yanow
