Another entry from the Sonny Lester Collection, this CD has music from eight different major saxophonists (
Illinois Jacquet, Benny Carter,
Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis,
Sonny Stitt,
Zoot Sims,
Phil Woods,
Gerry Mulligan, and
Gato Barbieri) but incomplete personnel listings, no recording dates, and no liner notes to tell where these selections came from. There is quite a variety here, from
Illinois Jacquet jamming "Soft Winds" with organist
Jimmy McGriff and
Buddy Rich,
Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis ripping through "On Green Dolphin Street,"
Phil Woods in Europe playing "Out of Nowhere," and
Gato Barbieri from an early avant-garde date with trumpeter Don Cherry. But, overall, this is a mishmash, with performances tossed together for no particular reason. Better to skip this one and look for more complete and coherent collections elsewhere. ~ Scott Yanow
