The COVID-19 lockdown prompted many artists to perform stripped-down solo livestream sets from their living rooms, but rustic Montreal indie-rock ensemble Half Moon Run aren’t ones to confine themselves to a single smartphone screen. Like many co-workers, the band stayed connected via Zoom-style meetings, though in their case, they had their instruments in hand, playing their individual parts from their respective homes and editing the feeds together into a series of split-screen performance videos. The Covideo Sessions compiles them into a cohesive “live” album that proves social distancing has had no disruptive effect on Half Moon Run’s telepathic sense of interplay and divine four-way harmonies. Moonlit ballads like “Black Diamond” and “Sun Leads Me On” are particularly well-suited to this virtual coffeehouse setting, but Half Moon Run doesn’t skimp on their more grandiose ambitions—guest contributions from the Esca string quartet ensure that fleet-footed numbers like “I Can’t Figure Out What’s Going On” lose none of their cinematic sweep. And of course, no Half Moon Run set is complete without an airing of their heart-racing 2012 signature “Full Circle,” which wasn’t included in the original video series, but was added here to let you more vividly imagine you’re experiencing the band in their natural soft-seater-theater element.
