With two of Quincy Jones's finest film scores complete on one CD, this is possibly the best introduction to this under-appreciated side of Jones's long and varied career. The Oscar-winning THE PAWNBROKER, a searing 1966 drama starring Rod Steiger as a former concentration camp inmate, is the more famous of the two films, and Jones's appropriately somber score is justly celebrated. However, it's the score for the almost-forgotten THE DEADLY AFFAIR that's the real find. The film itself, a 1967 British caper film starring James Mason and directed by Sidney Lumet, is nothing special, but Jones's score is varied and exciting, exploring a variety of moods and musical styles. Best of all, the CD features the film's theme song, an Astrud Gilberto vocal called "Who Needs Forever" that's quite rare and extremely good.
