The Fureys were one of the most influential and important Celtic groups to appear in the '70s. The band enjoyed a fair amount of success in the genre, and managed to put out a few albums before it all was over. Strangely enough, despite the rather small amount of albums they released, they have also had several greatest-hits collections appear. This is another of the many, and it is very hard to say how this compares with the others. Most of the album is comprised of their better-known material, but because they never truly had any "hits" it is hard to say if the band's fans would want different material than what is here. Still, there are a few obvious high points, like the rugged folk of "Old Joe," the sweet innocence of "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen," and the haunting bitterness of the "Anniversary Waltz." There are several other good songs to be found here, but many of them are quite similar and are hard to recommend above one another. Fans of this genre are probably familiar with the Fureys, and they should know that this collection is definitely good but honestly is not great. To those who may not be familiar with the band, just know that this is a good place to hear them for the first time but there is definitely some dated material here that does not hold up as well.
