This "New Sound" dated from 1963, when the big bands had been elbowed aside by smaller típico groups. It consisted largely, and effectively, of the old sound with a lead flutist. This was always a working dance band. Some fads and fashions of the time show up, including a "pachanga merengue" no less, but
Machito could never be anything but
Machito, and
Machito is what you get. ~ John "Storm" Roberts
