Perhaps THE PRECIOUS PRIZE’s most alluring quality is the ability to evoke heaviness despite a lack of overstated density. Highlights such as “Numbers” have the math-rock appeal of latter-day structural nihilists like Car Bomb or Child Abuse, but manage to feel grippingly intimate, thanks to both Cacciola’s confrontational beat-poetry style vocals and Tolitta’s looping, aggravated guitars.
