The first two volumes of The Product were mixtapes released in 2012 and 2013. For the third installment, released in 2020 and presented as a true album, August Alsina off-loads 90 minutes of content with a track list long enough to require scrolling to read in full. A few songs stand out, such as the sleek and chiming perseverance anthem "Today," the falsetto-showcasing love ballad "Work to Do," and the tracks featuring Tink, Juicy J, and Lil Wayne. Alsina still bares his soul in a conversational way that remains best served by predominantly low-profile, trap-styled productions. However, the mid-grade quality of most of the material, combined with minimal variation between tracks -- from the beats to the singer's verge-of-tears style -- makes most of the sequence pass in a blur. Alsina might do well to be as bold with production choices as he is with his songwriting. He has been a sympathetic artist since his debut, but this contains some of his bravest lyrics yet. Few active R&B vocalists would be open enough to write and sing "Dear God, make me a bird, so I can fly far -- far, far away from here."
