Improvisation is at the centre of drummer/composer Tarun Balani’s The Shape of Things to Come, a collaboration with his Dharma quartet. Trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, pianist Sharik Hasan and guitarist Olli Hirvonen join him for a project that, while recorded in 2019, offers music resonant for a world confronted by difficult choices that will define their future existence. The moody “Dr. Escher” and the soothing “2°”—both originally recorded by Balani for his electronic-music EP 2° as Seasonal Affected Beats—get fresh and creative jazz reinterpretations. “As We Lay Under the Trees” offers tranquility, a stark contrast to the elegiac “Azaan” and the lively and galloping title track.
