Sandra Cross' mix of sensuality and vulnerability was nicely presented on the nine songs featured on this CD. They were both reggae remakes of African-American soul hits and vintage lover's rock-style romantic fare.
Cross' covers of
Mary Wells' "My Guy" and
The Stylistics' "Stop, Look, Listen" demonstrate the closeness between 1970s reggae and "sweet" soul, while "Holding On," "Bear With Me," and "Take Your Time" have soaring harmonies, superb arrangements, and her inviting leads. She doesn't have the power or range of
Marcia Griffith or
Judy Mowatt, but
Cross' love tunes still have great appeal and urgency. ~ Ron Wynn
