North Carolina’s The Ascendicate treasures melody and knotty funk rhythms as much as they do pure heaviness. The Christian thrashers have cooked up an appealing blend of metalcore aggression with clean vocals and hook-y choruses. The nu metal-ish “You and Me,” is both heartfelt and rhythmically propulsive, almost like one of P.O.D.’s leftover tracks, and its immediate follow-up, “Burden,” which features more raw screaming than most other tracks, alternates between outright heaviness and soaring uplift. Final track “One Day Without You” is the power ballad that should open some doors for them, but it’s atypically commercial compared to the rest.
