The soundtrack to Topsy Turvy, Mike Leigh's Academy Award-winning film about Gilbert & Sullivan's turbulent creative partnership, features excerpts of some of the duo's most popular operettas, including The Sorcerer, Princess Ida and The Mikado. "If You Give Me Your Attention" from Princess Ida, "Incantation" and "But Soft.../Why, Where Be Oi?" from The Sorcerer and "Behold! The Lord High Executioner," "Three Little Maids From School Are We" and "A Wand'ring Minstrel I" from The Mikado are some of the highlights of this album, which also includes excerpts of Carl Davis' score, which was inspired by Arthur Sullivan's music for The Mikado. Like the movie itself, Topsy Turvy's score reflects equal amounts of affection and attention to detail, making it as good an introduction to Gilbert & Sullivan as it is a companion to the film. ~ Heather Phares
