A trio comprised of Italians Renato Geremia on reeds, flute, violin, and piano and
Tiziano Tononi on percussion, plus French new music tuba player
Michel Godard, this recording is an ongoing conversation between three very fine musicians. Calling themselves the Multiphonic Trio, the group plays a series of sketches from which the players launch their sometimes adventurous, often free-style improvisations. While the playing is first-rate, there is a sense of an ambitious project not fully realized. Geremia is amazingly versatile, as his solos on all instruments are uniformly inventive and technically advanced. Classically trained Godard continues to grow as a performer, and his soloing on tuba is virtuosic. Percussionist Tononi, a favorite on the Italian scene, is a sensitive performer, who listens carefully to timbre and sound. The highlight of the album is Tononi's "Lulu Suite," an impressionistic collection of four pieces displaying different styles and emotions.
