Released by Wallace and Music a la Coque five years after
Bz Bz Ueu's eponymous debut EP,
Uhozmerigotz represents the coming to fruition of promises held in the 1995 opus. The raw punk energy has simmered down just enough to allow better musicianship to come through. Still riding a wave initiated by Ne Zhdali, the quintet blends horn licks (saxophone and trumpet) with a postmodern funk guitar and an avant-punk rhythm section. Efisio Biancofiore's guitar is strongly reminiscent of Leonid Soybelman. It leads the group into playful but complicated tunes filled with childish humor (enhanced by the use of toys and small instruments) and off-kilter beats. Tons of ideas are packed into each two-minute piece. "W Laa...," with its toy police car effects, stands as a delightful highlight, but other memorable moments abound, like the riff in "Parametro Biancofiore" and the manic title track that has a garage rock thing going, in addition to everything else. All one can hope for now is that the band can record a full-length album. They're so ready. ~ François Couture
