When you're in the mood for pointless mayhem but not in the mood for, say,
Gwar, you can always turn to the Load Records stable, where flaming entropy is always the order of the day but chaos reigns in whimsy rather than blood. The label's latest acquisition is this Massachusetts quartet, whose debut album for the label is bewildering in generally pretty fun ways and tiring in sometimes just plain tiring ways. The songs alternate between brief instrumental snippets that sound like
the Residents on an off day ("Processional," "Have You Got Cable?") and out of their minds, over the top shriek-athons that sound like a slightly less aggressive version of
Lightning Bolt ("Dub," "Irk"). Unfortunately, there's also the occasional puerile potty-talk excursion like "If Humans Had No Poops," most of which aren't funny enough to make them worth sniggering at. The lyrics are what you'd expect: "I am demonoid the homo-man/I live near your house," "You want them to see your socks," "Milk and bread and gas and cheese/This is all we need," etc. Recommended to those who already know what to expect; all others should proceed with caution, which may be exactly what they're hoping the reviewers will say, but is true nonetheless. ~ Rick Anderson
