Dense walls of sound that speak to a metallic aesthetic --
Persona's
Uptight is either IDM, or middle-of-the-road techno. In 2002, techno has found itself at a ceiling as far as creativity is concerned. IDM, on the other hand, is full of new ideas and new experiments. Therefore,
Persona's
Uptight would fit much better into an IDM category with artists such as
Oval,
Twine,
Aphex Twin, and the like. The Mille Plateaux and Hefty labels comes to mind while this release plays. At the same time, though, this recording was produced in 2000, and was certainly ahead of its time, possibly by a decade or more. With
Uptight,
Persona (the pseudonym of Detroit noise-rocker
Eric Cook) has created an excellent, and almost industrial recording. There's a lot happening. Listeners will appreciate the collage aspects of this recording.
Persona has assembled a recording that's unnervingly relentless, while at the same time being fresh and bold.
Persona's
Uptight is an excellent recording, and for all of its disjointed experimentation, it breathes new life into an overly stagnant genre. Great work.
