ALBUM

Die Sängerin der legendären britischen Rockpop-Band Pretenders hat schon immer ein Faible für Coverversionen: Mit UB 40 sang Chrissie Hynde zum Beispiel den Sonny and Cher-Kassiker "I Got You Babe“, und für einen BBC-Sampler klagte sie sich durch "Everyday Is Like Sunday" von Morrissey. Wie dieser auch dieses Jahr ein nostalgisches Cover-Album herausbrachte – sowie ein wenig früher das Pretenders-Cover "Back On The Chain Gang", so zieht nun seine gute Freundin Hynde mit "Valve Bone Woe" nach. Auch hier regiert Vintage-Flair und Retro-Style, denn Hynde hat sich das unter anderem American-Songbook mit vielen jazzigen Standards vorgeknöpft. Dabei sind beispielsweise Klassiker von Brian Wilson, Frank Sinatra oder John Coltrane. Die Tracks umweht dabei stets der geschmackssichere Hauch der Vergangenheit, Hyndes typische nonchalante wie prägnante Stimme verleiht manchen Songs ein bisschen rockig-verruchtes Flair und die Arrangements sind derart arty ausgetüftelt, dass selbst die 20-minütige Version von Charles Mingus "Meditation On A Pair Of Wire Cutters" in der nun Drei-Minuten-Version nicht erstickt, sondern geradezu erhaben wirkt. Hynde, die anfänglich Skrupel zeigte, sich in anderen Genres als dem Rock zu bewegen, macht für Jazz, mit dem sie aufwuchs auch deshalb eine Ausnahme: Ihr fehlt es in der aktuellen Musik an guten Melodien. Diese legt sie nun auf "Valve Bone Woe" spielerisch frei. Der Aufbau des Albums mit dem Wechsel von traditionellem Jazz mit Singer-Songwriter-Nummern (wie Nick Drakes "River Mann" oder "No Return" von Ex-Gatte und The-Kinks-Sänger Ray Davies) verleiht dem Ganzen eine zusätzliche Raffinesse, wobei die eingestreuten Latin-, Dub- oder Chanson-Sprengsel sowieso schon ziemlich charmant sind. Hynde raunt, haucht, croont dazu so selbstbewusst, sinnlich, spröde und sentimental als hätte sie nie etwas anderes gesungen als Jazz.
