For its double-disc Voice + Vision album, U.K. folk label Topic have teamed up with the General Federation of Trade Unions to present a decade-spanning portrait of the Workers' movement. Topic has long been a home for politically charged folk music, and cornerstone artists like Ewan MacColl, Louis Killen, Pete Seeger, and Norma Waterson have a history of chronicling songs of protest, resistance, collaboration, and social injustice. In addition to tracks by Martin Carthy, Dick Gaughan, and other leading lights of British folk are newer voices like Kiti Theobald, Jack Forbes, and 17-year-old Piers Haslam. Any new collection from Topic is generally worth consideration, but Voice + Vision lies very close to the heart of what this historically important label is about.
