Wonderful sounding CD transfer of a 1958 compilation of some of the group's previously unanthologized (in 1958) songs, ranging from the 1950 vintage title track (which appeared on the soundtrack of John Ford's Wagon Master -- the premiere of the network-TV series Wagon Train, based on the Ford movie, facilitated this release) to 1947's "The Whiffenpoof Song." The
Nolan/
Perryman/
Spencer/Carson version of the group is featured (on "Cowboy Camp Meetin'"), as is the
Perryman/Curtis/Doss line-up ("Wagons West"). The singing is impeccable throughout, the sound glowing and crisp, and the songs comprise a solid representation of material beyond the Pioneers' best known hits. The only flaw is a funny one involving the art work -- on the 1996 CD reissue, someone at Special Music's art department accidentally had "Wagons East" (the name of John Candy's final film) printed on the jewelbox spine.
