It's curious to see an artist so young drawing on such a wealth of musical references. YUNGBLUD is at once an eternally rebellious teenager, a new pop icon, a rapper who disavows the term, and a reject from the "The Voice" generation. In short, his second album, weird!, is a summary of all that. Rap, though, seems increasingly absent from his music. California nu-metal influences can then be found on the opening track teresa, or on mars, setting the tone for an album designed around rock orchestrations. Although musically ecumenical, he knows how to venture towards more pop-rock electronic sounds like the wild superdeadfriends, reminiscent of some pieces from The Servant. In fact, everything is cleverly designed to target a teenage audience, both in terms of music, and of the image: that of a cheeky kid with gelled-up hair, surfing the Soundcloud rap aesthetic, and whose music can only be called "weird". A sure-fire hit. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
