This sequel to his 1998 release WHEN SPIRITS FLY continues Scott Cossu's string of soothing, deeply felt instrumental releases. The palette is quite broad here, as Cossu's piano and keyboard lines are fleshed out by acoustic and electric guitar (Van Manakas), violin (Willie Royal), cello (Jaime Seibert), soprano saxophone (Justo Almario), bass (Tom Canning), and drum and auxiliary percussion (Geoffrey Gordon and Scott Vomvolakis). But while the list of instrumentation suggests the album will be dense and busy, quite the opposite is true. WHEN SPIRITS FLY...AGAIN is tastefully arranged, smooth, and expansive.
The cover photo of a dazzling, cloud-draped sunset and song titles like "Vineyard by the Sea" and "Tranquility" hint at the organic, meditative aspect of the music here. Cossu's piano is at the center of most tracks, creating Satie-like meditations, but the presence of drums and saxophone give some tracks the feel of easy listening jazz ("Shady Grove" is a case in point). As per usual with Cossu's work, the disc is appropriate for a drive in the country, background ambience, or as a soundtrack to focused meditation.
