There are more than one dozen albums on the market using the words "When the Saints Go Marching In" in the title. Legacy's contribution to this wholesome little category is an 11-track jazz sampler that combines swing musicians
Louis Armstrong,
Benny Goodman,
Charlie Barnet and
Count Basie with vocalists
Ella Fitzgerald and
Lena Horne and modern jazz pioneers
Charlie Parker,
Dizzy Gillespie and
Miles Davis. It's a pleasant little introduction to the genre, and both
Ella and
Dizzy get in twice. Calling the entire album "When the Saints Go Marching In" was an odd maneuver, and might prove misleading for those who are expecting a Dixieland compilation. If Legacy had to choose a title from the track list, maybe they could have called it "Street Beat," "Blue Juice" or best of all, "Groovin' High."
