The Maryland-based trio Mason Summers taps into the defiant spirit of early punk rock on the pugnacious and thought-provoking Who Wants the Future?. The group is loudly and proudly Christian in content, using its brash attack to drive home messages of struggle and rebirth. Guitarist Mikey Scars and bassist Lydia Danger infuse their vocals with plenty of bratty attitude, tempered with a sense of spiritual mission. Tracks like “Battleflag” (a garage-rock rewrite of “Onward, Christian Soldiers”) and “You Really Bring Me Along” (jazzed up with blasts of saxophone) are rousing anthems of ferocious faith. Moody thrash workouts (“Pedestal”), Motown-style grooves (“Lonely Planet”) and reggae excursions (“Two or More”) add sonic variety. What’s consistent lyrically is a refusal to conform to the ways of a materialistic world – as Scars puts it in “Fall to Pieces”: “I’m happy to be different, I’m happy to be strange.” All told, Who Wants the Future? is one of the most invigorating expressions of Christ-centered punk since the early days of MxPx.
