If a title like
Wiggle Walk sounds like a throwback to, say, the 1950s, that's just fine with
Shaun Young, because that's exactly what it is. In case the title doesn't do it, then the photo of a pair of legs with an old-fashioned roadster in the background will. Yes, it's rockabilly time, and
Young is joined by guitarist
Bobby Horton, bassist Billy Horton, guitarist Leroy Biller, and drummer
Buck Johnson on a fun-filled set that covers everything from burning love to carburetors. Perhaps the echo and perky guitar on "My Advice" will be familiar, and the catchy riffs of "Havin' More Fun Than the Law Should Allow" are old hat, but what of it?
Young and company put a lot of gusto into it, and like the stuff they're borrowing from, it's lots of fun. They even throw in a number of ballads like "I've Found What I Was Looking For" and a nice
Buddy Holly ripoff, "When You're in Love." Indeed, it's the kind of approach that reminds you how fun and danceable rock was before it had to mean anything. Of course it may be more difficult to appreciate the sexism of the title cut in the post-millennium, but it will probably seem innocent compared to the continuous striptease of MTV. For folks who like rock & roll the way it used to be,
Young's
Wiggle Walk will fit the bill. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
