Cumberland sounds like a name for a fly-by-night label that releases compilations consisting of poor sound quality and/or re-recordings, but this 14-track release -- despite its looks -- is as legitimate as it gets. Released through UMG (Universal), this offers a rather arbitrary sampling of jazz vocals, including
Ella Fitzgerald's "From This Moment On,"
Sarah Vaughan's "Moon River,"
Dorothy Dandridge's "The Touch of Your Lips," and
Dinah Washington's "Unforgettable." An enjoyable round-up of well-known recordings, it's definitely geared toward casual listeners.
