Georgia Anne Muldrow is a producer, songwriter, and singer who is in the cabal of off-center R&B space cadets that includes
Sa-Ra and Platinum Pied Pipers. Originally self-released in 2004, this 20-minute EP was picked up for wider release by Stones Throw, where
Muldrow is certainly at home. Her beats are gelatinous and dizzy, often baring her inspirations --
Madlib,
Jay Dee, Platinum Pied Pipers'
Waajeed -- without mimicking them. She sings about things like mortality, self-improvement, and the simple bliss of a kiss on a cold day. The dreamy manner in which her often multi-tracked voice floats and flutters without being ostentatious is alluring enough to outweigh whatever aversions you might have to lyrics that sometimes lean toward the abstract and otherworldly. Just out of her teens when she first released these tracks,
Muldrow should be worth watching for a long time. She takes cues from the past and present but is smart enough to mutate them, and she seems destined to become progressively unique with time. Her appearances on a pair of 2005 albums --
Dwight Trible & the Life Force Trio's
Love Is the Answer and Platinum Pied Pipers' Triple P -- are also well worth seeking out. ~ Andy Kellman
