Occasionally,
Sleeping Flies' resemblance to
Primal Scream's dance side is uncanny. They follow in their innovative footsteps with a similar blend of shuffling beats and party-'til-morning grooves, while song titles such as "Feel Like Movin' On" (which was featured in a television commercial for Cingular) are close echoes of
Primal Scream's
Screamadelica. The Swedish trio pays homage to some of their labelmates too:
You Are Superior was named after a line from a track by
Biowire and the instrumental "Enter the Jivaro Dub" namechecks (you guessed it)
Jivaro. Although there are no collaborations with those artists here,
Sleeping Flies' assembly of acid house, ambient dub, and early-'90s Brit-pop was co-produced by Bill Doss, who otherwise writes sunny pop for
the Olivia Tremor Control and
the Sunshine Fix. He even straps on a bass for a couple of tracks. The result contributes to a superior debut and provides a promising future for Electronic Watusi Boogaloo. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
