Bakersfield's
Invisible Astro Healing Rhythm Quartet play a brand of funky, hypnotic jazz equally indebted to
Sun Ra's astral meditations, Ethiopian musicians such as
Mulatu Astatke, and groove-heavy psych/Krautrock bands like
Can. Their extended compositions blend swirling, repetitive rhythms with spiritually minded trumpet and saxophone solos, creating intensely focused yet free-flowing jams. The
Quartet was established in 2010 by Bakersfield College music students Jordan Aguirre (electric guitar, organ), Andrew Koeth (electric bass, organ), Brenndan Morlan (electric guitar, electric bass), and Alex Sarad (drums, percussion). Accompanied by
Kris Tiner on trumpet and
Phillip Greenlief on tenor sax, they recorded their self-titled debut album live at Bakersfield's Metro Galleries in February of 2012. After raising money through a Kickstarter campaign, the album was released on vinyl by Epigraph Records in November of 2013. The group recorded its second album (
2) with producer
Chris Schlarb, and Chicago-based Trouble in Mind released the album in November of 2015. ~ Paul Simpson
