The debut by New York's
Furslide, entitled
Adventure, was produced by
Nellee Hooper (
U2,
Smashing Pumpkins,
Massive Attack, etc.) and released on Hooper's new record label, Meanwhile. Similar to the other artists that Hooper has worked with,
Furslide (guitarist/singer
Jennifer Turner, bassist Jason Lader, and drummer Adam MacDougall) doesn't just stick to one kind of rock music; they have the talent to venture into different styles. Turner's voice can be soothing ("Hawaii") or comparable to such other female rock & rollers as
Debbie Harry and
Liz Phair ("Shallow"). Musically,
Furslide tackle spacy alterna-rock ("Skinny Girl"), distorted guitar romps ("Bring You Down"), and garage pop ("Today Forever"), while "Love Song" grooves along with a drum machine and acoustic guitar. Although Turner has played lead guitar for
Natalie Merchant in the past,
Furslide is definitely not Lilith Fair material. If anything, they have more in common with such '90s alternative hitmakers as
Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana. [Note: the CD version of
Adventure contains the bonus track "The Cleaning Lady."] ~ Greg Prato
