Emulating Cash Money and
Lil Wayne’s
Young Money crew, the
Trill Fam clique features some veterans and some newcomers from the Trill Entertainment roster. This includes Southern party rap stars
Lil' Boosie and
Webbie, both of whom get plenty of turns on the mike here, and unsurprisingly, have a hand in most of the highlights. The
Zhané-quoting “Turn the Beat Up” and the
Webbie feature “My People” are the instant winners, with the
Birdman feature “Do It Bigger” coming in third as it lives up to its title. Bigger is the theme until the laid-back “Ducked Off” proves
the Trill Fam can still satisfy with a more level head, but sticking the “for the ladies” numbers together in one big bunch -- starting with
Lil' Trill’s “No. 1 Girl” -- must be an oversight. Put it on shuffle for better hustle and then marvel at how this collection of simple Baton Rouge weekend music holds your attention. ~ David Jeffries
