Throughout his career, drummer
Chico Hamilton has had an impressive track record as a talent scout. During 1988-92, he recorded four CDs with the up and coming altoist
Eric Person, an inventive post-bop player who would have a short stint with
the World Saxophone Quartet.
Hamilton called this particular group (which also featured guitarist
Cary DeNigris and bassist
Reggie Washington)
Arroyo, and they perform a very well-rounded set on this Soul Note release. The music ranges from
Lester Young's "Tickle Toe" and a lengthy reworking of "Alone Together" to six group originals that are sometimes fairly free. A stimulating set that is well worth exploring. ~ Scott Yanow
