The lullabies (cançons de bressol) collected here are not folk melodies, but art songs in the form of lullabies; most of them would tax the vocal abilities of the average parent singing over a child after a long day. All are written by composers of a Spanish, Catalan, Basque, or Argentinean heritage, and are in Spanish, Catalan, or Euskera, a Basque language. The songs are generally in minor keys and have a melancholy character that may not have the most soothing effect on a baby, but perhaps the bias toward major-key lullabies reflects a northern European bias, and babies in other parts of the world are happy to drift off to sleep to sounds that others might consider mournful. In any case, all the songs collected here have a gentle character and lovely, lyrical melodies. The majority of the composers are little known, but the two most appealing and memorable songs are by one of the most famous composers on the collection, Xavier Montsalvatge. Soprano Olga Sala i Martin doesn't have a large voice, but she sings with warmth and tenderness, and pianist Ana García Urcola accompanies her with restraint and delicacy. The sound has good balance, but is a little distant, and that's easily remedied by turning up the volume a notch or two.
