The sublime
Caribbean Moonlight is as evocatively and perfectly titled as any
Les Baxter LP -- its melodies move with the hypnotic beauty and sway of moonbeams flickering across the water's surface, while its supple, exotic rhythms conjure a nearly mystical paradise of palm trees, sandy beaches, and cool breezes. The record bears few traces of kitsch, instead favoring authentic textures and beats rooted in the musical traditions of Cuba, Trinidad, and the Caymans.
Baxter's feather-light touch is perfectly suited to such musical environs, and songs like "Deep Night," "Poinciana," and "Carnival" positively shimmer. ~ Jason Ankeny
