"Bizarro" might actually be more like it.
Nick Buzz is a supergroup of sorts, featuring Martin Tielli of Rheostatics on vocals, guitarist
Rob Piltch (who has worked with both
Holly Cole and
Loreena McKennitt), Jon Goldsmith (who has played keyboards for
Bruce Cockburn and
Jane Siberry), and violinist
Hugh Marsh, who has played with nearly everyone, but most notably
Loreena McKennitt and
Bruce Cockburn. Some of the tracks on
Circo are jazzy little numbers that would fit comfortably beside classics like "Someday My Prince Will Come," while others head so far out into left field they would leave both
Tom Waits and Kurt Weill scratching their heads. A cover version of
Joni Mitchell's "River" somehow manages to combine both styles in the same song. It's impressive, but it's also a bit disorienting at times. Can be rewarding, but approach with caution. ~ Sean Carruthers
