Pianist
Don Friedman's fourth and final Riverside recording (which was reissued as an Original Jazz Classics CD in 1998) can easily be divided into two. The first four selections match
Friedman, guitarist
Attila Zoller, bassist Dick Kniss and drummer
Dick Berk on four fairly free pieces that find the musicians interacting intuitively with each other. The final three numbers ("Israel," "Darn That Dream" and "You Stepped out of a Dream") find
Friedman returning to his roots in
Bill Evans and some more conventional swinging. Overall, this is a fine effort that features the two sides of early
Don Friedman. ~ Scott Yanow
