Unlike many of the erotica-style salsa albums, where the obviously provocative lyrics overshadow the sappy arrangements, this one actually swings! This was the ex-Chaney solo debut for Musical Productions (under Sonotone Records' distribution agreement), and it could be confused with former Chaney partner Eddie Santiago's trombone lineup and style. In any case, comparisons are to be avoided, as the music's laid-back signature is very danceable, without deviating from its romantic content. Willie Gonzalez' smooth, pleasing vocalizing made hits like "Amor Pirata," "Quiero Morir en Tu Piel," and "Hazme Olvidarla" quite memorable. Gonzalez, Musical Productions, and company certainly knew how to make the formula work, and this effort is proof that even late-'80s mainstream salsa could produce music that would yield continuing interest in salsa expression. ~ José A.
