Brandon Fields is usually thought of as an R&B-ish jazz alto saxophonist with a sound touched a little by
David Sanborn. On this set, he is particularly creative and stretches himself, playing some excellent soprano and tenor in addition to alto. Sometimes the music is funky but it is also quite explorative in spots, with
Fields heard throughout at his most lyrical and inventive. Trumpeter/flügelhornist Walt Fowler is a strong asset, "Phone Sax" (a conversation between
Fields' alto and Gina Kronstadt's talking) is humorous, and several of the numbers are memorable. This is one of
Brandon Fields' finest recordings; pity that the Nova label has since ceased operations. ~ Scott Yanow
