On paper, Juiceboxxx sound like a mess (his influences run the gamut from the Ramones and Public Enemy to the Chemical Brothers and Bruce Springsteen), but on record he cuts a relatable and charismatic figure who manages to mind-meld high energy rap, pop, punk, garage, and classic rock into submission without losing the tiniest bit of flow. Employing a dense yet innately listenable fusion of cascading golden age rap beats, electro-shocked loops, and gnashing guitars, Freaked Out American Loser is a pop culture pinball machine on full-tilt, and JB is at his most compelling when he augments his Ad-Rock-isms with a bit of Mark E. Smith-inspired punk veneer.
