Judging from the no-nonsense, low-effort packaging,
Funk Hits has all the looks of a middling compilation, but it's not half-bad, throwing 20 cuts together that range greatly in year-of-release terms, from the '60s to the early '80s. This is quite random, with little thought put into sequencing or continuity; however, most of the selections are spectacular, with
Junior's "Mama Used to Say,"
William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful for What You've Got,"
James Brown's "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine,"
Sam & Dave's "Soul Man,"
King Floyd's "Groove Me," and
Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff" leading the pack.
