Some of
Sammy Davis, Jr.'s best-known songs are here, including the sappy "Candy Man," and
Mike Curb's production values are, well, curbed in some respect, as you get to hear
Davis swing a little bit. Jazz numbers like "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "The Lady Is a Tramp" were sung better by
Frank Sinatra, but
Davis does them well. More poppish pieces "What Kind of Fool Am I?," "Mr. Bojangles," "I've Gotta Be Me," and "Talk to the Animals" are readily associated with
Sammy D, and are included. Slightly better than the similar Curb best-of collection, it's probably still far short of his definitive work, or collaborations with the infamous
Rat Pack. ~ Michael G. Nastos
