This LP has a generous amount of music, 20 performances totalling around an hour. More importantly the recordings are generally excellent, featuring (with the exception of
Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady") music recorded by American bands while in London.
The Plantation Orchestra (a fine dance band from 1926),
Noble Sissle's Orchestra, Ike "Yowse Suh" Hatch's Harlem Stompers, the talented trumpeter/vocalist
Valaida Snow, the
Nicholas Brothers (singing and tap-dancing on two numbers), Lavada Carter, Buck And Bubbles,
Elisabeth Welch,
Fats Waller and singer
Adelaide Hall (who duets with
Waller's pipe organ on "I Can't Give You Anything but Love") are all represented by highly enjoyable recordings. This sampler is well worth acquiring.
