Hedwig & the Angry Inch was considered something revelatory in the 1997-1998 theater season. An off-Broadway show in the guise of a rock concert, Hedwig won the Outer Critics Circle Award for best off-Broadway musical. It's no surprise --
Hedwig & the Angry Inch is certainly unlike any other musical of its time, including such other "rock operas" like Rent and
the Who's Tommy. This tale of a German transsexual rock star with fading fame unravels as stories between songs in a concert. It utterly fascinating, with a far more punk aesthetic than one would associate with a musical. A truly inventive and amazing creation worth hearing. ~ Sarah Erlewine
