Alt-folkie Luke Temple has a lively finger-picking guitar style and an expressive voice that slides charmingly into falsetto, both of which he applies to engaging songs that sound at times like acoustic Radiohead fronted by Jeff Buckley and Elliott Smith. Dreamy and literate, the songs don't go quite where expected, but the bends and forks aren't jarring, just gently surprising. This melodic inventiveness, plus stunning vocal harmonies, are used to best effect on "Old New York," a sunny-sounding number that, on deeper listening, is a lament for a neighborhood and existence in decline. The album closer, "Only a Ghost," is a captivatingly raw and minimalist ballad followed by a lovely hidden organ instrumental.
