The funk revivalist movement in acid jazz has many different players, but few have been as direct about their approach as
Track & Field. Slow, rolling beats give into slippery basslines and melodic synth work, while the occasional handclaps and abrasive samples pop up to remind listeners that this music is made in 2002. Although based almost entirely in modern computer equipment, it's astounding how much it sounds straight out of a '70s B-movie, from the dramatic melodies to the repetitive passages. Unquestionably funky and authentic, the only problem is that it isn't that memorable. Songs blend together easily, and with so little variance in songwriting it eventually becomes an incidental soundtrack more than anything else. There's a great deal of energy here, but it's so focused towards one goal that the album suffers from a sameness that can be frustrating at times. Still,
In Search Of... has enough sass and swagger to maintain some interest, just be warned that the album as a whole isn't as digestible. ~ Bradley Torreano
